Books

There are a number of books available describing what mood disorders are, descriptions of the symptoms, discussions about the ever improving treatments, and how caregivers can help themselves and their loved ones who have mood disorders.

The books are listed in alphabetical order by author, and sometimes the books are linked to reviews provided by amazon.com.  We have included space for people who want to include short personal comments.

Most of the books are available in the Montgomery County Library system.  In cases where the books are not available from Montgomery County Library system, there are notations if they are available through the Virginia Library system or through NAMI Montgomery County.  The Montgomery County Library system can borrow books from other libraries.

If you are just starting to read about mood disorders you might consider Jamison's "Unquiet Mind" (for bipolar) or Manning's "Undercurrents" (for depression) as a book to start with.  DePaulo's "Understanding Depression" would be the second book to read to understand more about the diseases and treatment options.  If someone you are concerned about does not recognize his illness, Amador's "I Am Not Sick I Don't Need Help" is a good reference.  If you are experiencing ups and downs, Podell's "Contagious Emotions" is a useful book.
